“How long?”
Mark said, “Son, this is partly my fault.”
Daniel turned to him.
“Do not call me son right now.”
Mark went silent.
Jenna wiped her face.
“Since June.”
The wedding had been in July.
Daniel stared at her.
“You married me while you were sleeping with him.”
“It wasn’t like that.”
I spoke for the first time.
“Be very careful with that sentence.”
Jenna looked at me.
I’d known her for four years.
I’d gone wedding-dress shopping with her.
Helped with the bridal shower.
She’d called me Mom during her wedding speech.
Now she couldn’t look at me.
She whispered, “It started after Daniel and I were having problems.”
Daniel’s face tightened.
“We were stressed about the wedding.”
“You were never home.”
“I was working overtime to pay for the wedding.”
“I know.”
“Then don’t rewrite it.”
Mark tried again. “We crossed a line. It got out of control.”
