My four-year-old vanished from our garden during hide-and-seek — ten years later the new neighbours brought their fourteen-year-old over to say hello.

The fourteenth of June, 2015. A Saturday.

I was doing lunch. Adam was in the garden with Esme, who was four, and they were playing the game they played every single weekend.

He counts to twenty. She hides.

I could hear her laughing through the kitchen window and I remember being pleased about the weather.

And then it went quiet, and about four minutes later my husband came through that back door with his face completely wrong.

« I can’t find her. »

She was not in the garden. She was not in the house.

Police by two o’clock. Dogs by four. A hundred and eleven people on the Sunday and about three hundred by the Wednesday.

Divers in the cut on the Thursday because there is a canal about six hundred metres behind that house and there is a gap in the hedge at the bottom of the garden and everybody said it and nobody could prove it.

Nothing. For ten years. Not one thing.

We stayed in that house until 2018 and then we could not do it anymore, and we moved eleven miles to Ashwick and we did not tell most people where we had gone.

And in October of last year a family moved in next door.

Hendrik and Britt Falk. Forty-eight and forty-six. Pleasant, a bit quiet, a van, not much furniture.

On Friday the seventeenth of October they came round.

We were on the front porch and it was about half four and Britt Falk had brought a bottle of something I have never opened.

And after about ten minutes she turned and called their daughter over from their drive.

And the girl walked across those two lawns towards me.

Fourteen. Tall. Dark hair pushed behind one ear.

And she came up onto that porch and she looked straight into my eyes and did not look away.

They are Esme’s eyes.

Not similar. The same. The same shape and the same set and a specific thing my daughter’s face did at four which that girl’s face did at fourteen, which is that the left one closes a fraction more than the right when she is concentrating.

I said « Esme? » — out loud, on my own porch, to a child I had never met.

And Hendrik Falk took hold of her arm and moved her behind him, which is what a frightened man does and which I have since had to stop replaying.

And Britt Falk looked at me and said: « We knew this might come. »

Here is what happened on the fourteenth of June, 2015, and it took eleven months and a courtroom to assemble all of it.

Adam’s younger sister Nell was at our house that day.

She had come for lunch. She was in my kitchen for about twenty minutes and she left, or I thought she left, at about half twelve.

Nell Cassar was thirty-one.

In the January of 2015, five months earlier, Nell had a stillbirth at thirty-nine weeks.

A daughter. She had a name and there was a funeral and eleven of us were at it.

And Nell was not all right afterward, and the entire family knew she was not all right, and the entire family did what families do, which is ring occasionally and say she seems a bit better.

She walked my daughter out of the side gate at about ten past one while her brother was counting to twenty.

Esme knew her. Esme would have gone with her without one question, and did.

The side gate was on the camera of the house opposite and that footage existed in 2015 and was reviewed in 2015 and shows a woman and a child at the top of the drive for about two seconds at an angle that made her unidentifiable, and it was catalogued and it went nowhere.

Nell had her for eleven days.

In a holiday let on the coast, paid in cash, booked in a false name.
