Dad turned and faced the judge.
“Your Honor,” he said, “there’s something Nicole doesn’t know.”
I stared at him.
“Dad?”
He didn’t look at me.
“It’s about the condition of the house,” he continued.
The judge glanced at Claire.
“Counsel, do you know what he’s referring to?”
Claire stood.

“Not entirely, Your Honor.”

That surprised me. I’d thought Claire and Dad had worked this out together. That’s what the phone call at night must have been. That’s what the suit was for.
But Claire looked just as surprised as I was.
The judge studied my father for a long moment.
“Go on,” she said. “Stick to the relevant facts.”
Dad reached into his jacket and took out his phone. It was an old phone, with a cracked corner. He’d had it for six years and refused to replace it because “it still makes calls.”
