I couldn’t answer him.
Across the room, Andrew caught my eye.
He remembered too.
Almost a year after the wedding, Amanda and Andrew came for Sunday dinner.
Amanda arrived carrying a small gift bag.
“For me?” I asked.
“Technically.”
Inside were two knitted baby booties.
One was slightly larger than the other.
I stared at them.
Amanda grinned.
“You’ll need to keep a few weekends free, Grandma.”
I nearly knocked my chair over getting to her.
“You’re pregnant?”
“Eleven weeks.”
I hugged her.
Robin hugged both of us.
For several minutes, our kitchen became noise.
Questions.
Tears.
Amanda laughing because I was already asking about due dates and cribs.
Then she said, “If it’s a boy, we’ve been talking about names.”
Andrew stopped moving.
I noticed because everyone else was moving.
Amanda picked up one of the booties.
“I actually like Thomas.”
Andrew’s fork touched his plate.
