Waiting for medications to work.
Waiting for doctors to stop using words like “concerning.”
Eventually, we reached the sentence every parent fears.
There wasn’t much more they could offer.
Then we found a hospital trying a newer treatment approach for patients like Amanda.
That was where we met Andrew.
He was part of her specialist team.
The first time I saw him, he stood beside Amanda’s bed reading her chart.
For a moment, he didn’t speak.
He just stared at one page.
Then he closed the folder and looked at her.
“How are you feeling today?”
“Like I’ve been hit by a bus, but the bus was very organized about it.”
Andrew smiled.
He asked where she hurt, what made things worse, and what she’d been able to eat.
Then he asked something none of us expected.
“And what would you like to do if we can get you feeling better?”
