“You hid it in the condo.”
“Did I?”
“You gave that apartment to her because you thought no one would connect her to your old business.”
“Incorrect.”
“Then why?”
Alex's voice changed.
“Because I knew one day men like your son might tell her she had nowhere else to go.”
Sophie began crying silently beside me.
Caroline said something quieter.
Then Alex asked, “Where's Martin?”
No answer.
“Hospital?”
Silence.
“You haven't visited your brother.”
Caroline laughed.
“My brother became weak.”
Alex paused.
Then his next words changed everything.
“You pushed him.”
Inside our car, Maya sat forward.
Caroline responded too quickly.
“He fell.”
“You pushed him because he couldn't find the evidence.”
“He failed me.”
The admission hung in the air.
Maya whispered, “Got you.”
But Alex wasn't finished.
“And Melissa?”
Caroline said nothing.
“Did she fail you too?”
Jake shouted, “Stop talking about her!”
Alex seized it.
“Where is she, Jake?”
