Even Maya nearly smiled.
Jake's voice sharpened.
“She is my wife.”
“No. You're the man who stood outside a room while she was beaten.”
“That wasn't supposed to happen.”
Sophie inhaled sharply.
Caroline snapped, “Jake.”
Too late.
Maya glanced at the recording levels.
“Good.”
Alex's voice remained calm.
“What was supposed to happen?”
Jake hesitated.
Caroline answered.
“She was supposed to sign.”
“And if she refused?”
Silence.
Alex pushed.
“What happened to Melissa Grant when she refused?”
This time the silence lasted longer.
Then Jake said, “I don't know any Melissa.”
Caroline's voice became cold.
“Enough games. Where's the recording?”
“What recording?”
“Martin told me you copied it.”
“And Martin's memory survived nineteen years of drugs and paranoia?”
“He saw the camera.”
“Then he should have smiled.”
A gun clicked.
Sophie grabbed my hand.
Caroline said, “You've gotten old.”
Alex chuckled.
“So have you.”
“Where is it?”
“You beat my daughter for a piece of evidence you don't even know exists.”
