MY 12-YEAR-OLD CUT OFF HER HAIR TO MAKE A WIG FOR HER SICK CLASSMATE

MY 12-YEAR-OLD CUT OFF HER HAIR TO MAKE A WIG FOR HER SICK CLASSMATE. THE NEXT MORNING THE PRINCIPAL CALLED: “COME TO SCHOOL IMMEDIATELY.”

I RACED THERE FEARING THE WORST — AND OPENED THE DOOR TO A ROOM FULL OF CHILDREN WHO HAD ALL CUT OFF THEIR HAIR TOO.

PART 1

My 12-year-old daughter cut off her hair to make a wig for her terminally ill classmate — the next morning, the principal called me to come to school immediately.

My name is Grace. Only three months had passed since cancer took my husband. Our daughter Letty had always been a daddy’s girl.

One evening she locked herself in the bathroom, and when the door opened, her long blond hair was hacked to her shoulders. “There’s a girl in my class, Millie. She has cancer. Some boys laughed at her when she lost her hair. I read real hair can be made into wigs. Maybe mine can help machen.

Letty had watched her own father lose his hair to treatment. “Your dad would be so proud of you,” I whispered. We took her hair to a salon and had it made into a wig, and she brought it to school glowing.

The next morning the principal called. “Come right away. It’s about Letty.” My hands went cold. “Is she hurt?” “You need to see it with your own eyes.”

I raced there imagining every disaster. The principal, pale, opened his office door.

And I nearly collapsed.

Because the room was full of children.

And every single one of them had cut off their hair.
