Declan stood near the railing speaking quietly on the phone.
The storm had moved closer.
Lightning flickered far over the water.
Rebecca Sloan sat across from Grace.
“You need separate matrimonial counsel.”
“I called someone.”
“Who?”
“Margaret Cole.”
Rebecca gave an approving nod.
“She’s good.”
“She’s terrifying.”
“Also good.”
Grace smiled.
Then Rebecca’s phone buzzed.
She glanced at it.
The smile vanished.
“What?”
Rebecca looked at Grace.
“Federal agents just interviewed Ethan.”
Grace set her spoon down.
“About what?”
“Northstar.”
The name tightened something in Grace’s chest.
“You said the audit hadn’t started.”
“It hasn’t.”
“Then how do they know?”
Rebecca shook her head.
“I don’t know.”
Declan ended his call.
“What happened?”
Rebecca told him.
His expression sharpened.
Grace watched both of them.
“Someone else reported it.”
“Probably,” Rebecca said.
Grace looked toward the ocean.
Vanessa.
The thought came immediately.
But something felt wrong.
