“Against me?”
“Against everyone.”
The doorbell rang.
Both of them stopped.
Vanessa smiled.
“Your timing has always been your biggest weakness.”
She opened the door.
Two men in gray suits stood outside.
One showed a badge.
“Mr. Calloway?”
Ethan stared.
“Who are you?”
“Special Agent Morgan, Financial Crimes Division.”
The second man spoke.
“We need to ask you some questions regarding Northstar Advisory Partners.”
Ethan looked at Vanessa.
She was already walking down the hallway.
“Vanessa.”
She did not turn.
“Vanessa!”
The elevator doors opened at the end of the corridor.
She stepped inside.
For the first time all evening, Ethan felt actual fear.
Not humiliation.
Not anger.
Fear.
Because Northstar Advisory Partners was not a name anyone outside three people should have known.
And one of those people was dead.
Grace did not learn about the federal agents until 8:12.
She was sitting on a private terrace with a bowl of soup she had barely touched.
