A ceremony program identified her.
Mark and Claire. A Celebration of Love.
Saturday, 4:00 p.m.
The marina restaurant.
My husband had exchanged wedding vows while I was home washing his work clothes.
The folder had been created Sunday afternoon, apparently during a transfer of photographs from his phone.
I saved copies.
Then I searched Claire’s name online and found a public phone number for the gift shop where she worked.
I called.
“Is this Claire?”
“Yes. How may I help you?”
“My name is Lisa. I’m Mark’s wife.”
Silence.
Then she laughed nervously.
“I’m sorry. Who?”
“Lisa. I’ve been married to Mark for 19 years.”
“That’s not funny.”
“I’m not joking.”
Her voice hardened.
“Mark’s wife is dead.”
I couldn’t speak.
“Whoever you are, this is disgusting.”
She hung up.
I emailed the shop a photograph of Mark and me from our anniversary dinner six months earlier.
