I Thought My Teenage Son Was Staying at His Best Friend’s House Every Weekend Until His Mom Called Me With the Same Story

“I didn’t have time to change,” I said. “I’ve been up for thirty-six hours. Our son’s been missing.”

Greg closed his eyes.

“I’m sorry,” he said. “I’m so sorry, Laura. That’s my fault. I made him lie to you. All of it. My fault.”

I pulled a chair up to the side of the bed.

I sat down.

I didn’t know what to say. Ten years. I’d had ten years to think about what I’d say to Greg Rhodes if I ever saw him again. I’d practiced it in the shower. In the car. Lying awake at night.

I’d say, You ruined my life.

I’d say, Do you know what it did to Nathan, seeing you on that floor?

I’d say, I hope you’re happy. I hope it was worth it.

I didn’t say any of it.
