“He’s my dad,” he said.
So the boys took care of him.
Every weekend. Friday afternoon to Sunday night. For eight weekends.
Nathan told me every Friday he was going to Cole’s. Cole told Denise every Friday he was coming to our house. And then they drove to the Starlite Inn on Versailles Road.
They slept on the floor of room 14. On a pile of blankets Cole took from his basement.
They cleaned the room. They did Greg’s laundry at a laundromat down the street. They bought groceries with money from their part-time jobs. Nathan bags groceries at Kroger on Saturdays. Cole works at a car wash. They spent every dollar on their weekends at the Starlite.
They made him soup. Cole learned how from Denise. Chicken soup from scratch. Because Greg couldn’t eat much else.
