I Thought I Knew My Son’s Hockey Routine by Heart, Until His Coach Stopped Me and Asked One Confusing Question

“I know.”

“You let me think he forgot about me!” He was shouting now. I had never heard him shout like that. “Do you know what that was like? Do you know how many times I wondered if he even remembered my birthday? And he was writing me letters! The whole time!”

“Not the whole time. He relapsed, Sam. He left the program. I didn’t know if…”

“That’s not your call!” He grabbed the doorframe like he needed to hold onto something. “It’s my dad! It’s my letters! You don’t get to decide that for me!”

“I’m your mother. I was trying to…”

“You did the exact same thing! The exact same thing I did! And I’m the liar?”

He turned and went down the stairs. I heard him grab his jacket off the hook. I heard the front door open.

“Sam! Where are you going?”
