I broke my arm and asked my husband to help care for our 5-month-old twins, but he refused, telling me, “Moms don’t get sick days. You wanted kids, so you take care of them.” So I decided to teach him a lesson he would never forget.

“NO!” he shouted through the speaker. “How dare you make me look like some deadbeat?”

PART 2

“I didn’t make you look like anything, Mason,” I told him into the phone.

“What am I supposed to tell my mother?” he snapped back.

“Tell her the truth,” I repeated.

“The truth?” he scoffed. “And what’s that?”

“Tell her I broke my arm,” I said, listing each fact slowly. “Tell her I asked you to help me, and tell her you said moms don’t get sick days.”

Silence filled the line.

Then Mason spoke again, his voice dropping into a desperate hiss. “You’re humiliating me.”

That was the exact moment I truly understood his entire perspective.

“You weren’t embarrassed when you said it,” I reminded him.

“What?” he asked.

“You weren’t embarrassed when I was begging you for help,” I said firmly. “You’re just embarrassed that someone else might find out.”
