Her Husband Returned for the Brace, But the Porch Had Become a Witness-uyennhi - Storyreel001

I asked him why he had done it.

He looked embarrassed.

“Mom told me to.”

“And you listened.”

He nodded.

“Yes.”

I appreciated the honesty more than an excuse.

“Don’t do it again,” I said.

“I won’t.”

He left.

Later that afternoon, my husband came by.

He stood outside the porch instead of walking in.

The neighbor watched him from the kitchen window.

I stepped outside with my brace on.

He looked at it.

“I’m glad you have it.”

I said nothing.

“I know saying sorry isn’t enough.”

Still nothing.

He took a breath.

“My mother said you needed to prove you could contribute. My sister thought the pictures were funny. My brother was told to take the brace. And I let all of them do it.”

He looked directly at me.

“I was part of it.”

That mattered.

Not because it repaired anything.

Because for the first time, he named his own part without asking me to carry it for him.
