My daughter Nora was sixteen when she disappeared.
Eight years later, nearly six hundred miles from the beach where we last saw her, I noticed a stranger wearing something I recognized immediately.
It was a faded turquoise cover-up.
The same handmade cover-up my mother had sewn for Nora.
And there was one tiny detail that made it impossible for me to dismiss as a coincidence: the crooked yellow sun stitched into the bottom hem.
The Day Nora Disappeared
We had been spending a warm afternoon at a crowded beach.
Nora had been laughing, talking, and enjoying the day like any other teenager. At one point, she told me she was going to walk toward the ice cream stand at the far end of the beach.
I watched her disappear into the crowd.
I still remember noticing how much taller she seemed compared with the previous winter.
I had no idea that would be the last ordinary moment I would share with her.
