Chapter 1: The Guest Who Forgot Her Place 027

Kayla’s hands began to tremble.

Then Andrew tapped the screen, and the first voice that came out of his phone was unmistakably my sister’s—speaking about me in a way I had never imagined.

“I told you she would never suspect anything,” Kayla’s recorded voice said.

“She’s always been too busy trying to be the perfect wife.”

The kitchen seemed to tilt beneath me.

I stared at Andrew’s phone, unable to reconcile the voice I was hearing with the sister who had cried on my doorstep.

A second voice answered.

It was a man’s voice, unfamiliar but calm.

“And the husband?”

“Andrew?”

Kayla laughed softly in the recording.

“He’s predictable.

He’ll keep pretending to be uncomfortable until I push him far enough.

Men always reveal themselves eventually.”

My stomach tightened.

Andrew paused the recording.

Kayla lunged for the phone.

“Give me that!”
