Chapter 1: The Guest Who Forgot Her Place 027

Harborlight Home Services had been registered three months earlier.

Its mailing address was a rented office suite in another city.

The listed manager was a man named Daniel Mercer.

The name meant nothing to me.

But when I showed Kayla the business registration, she went completely still.

“You know him,” I said.

She didn’t answer.

“Kayla.”

“He told me he was starting a business.”

“Did he tell you he was using my identity to borrow money?”

“No.”

“Did you know about the application?”

She hesitated.

It was a small hesitation, but I saw it.

“Did you know?”

“I knew he wanted me to help him with paperwork.”

“What paperwork?”

“Business documents.

Tax forms.

Applications.

Things I didn’t understand.”

“Then why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because I knew you’d think I was stupid!”

“I think you made a terrible decision.

That’s not the same thing.”

She crossed her arms.
