Margaret looked toward Noah’s crib.
“He has enough.”
“Good.”
“I don’t want anything from Mr. Moretti.”
“You don’t owe him anything.”
“I don’t trust him.”
“That is understandable.”
Margaret frowned.
“You agree?”
“I would probably say the same thing.”
For the first time, Margaret almost laughed.
Almost.
“Then why should I believe you?”
“You don’t have to.”
Silence.
Marco continued.
“Your daughter asked for twenty dollars. Lorenzo gave you groceries because he could. That’s all.”
Margaret looked at Emily.
“What does he want?”
“Nothing.”
“Everybody wants something.”
Marco sighed.
“Maybe.”
He paused.
“But not this time.”
The call ended.
Margaret remained still for several seconds.
Then she noticed Emily standing in the hallway.
“You heard that?”
Emily nodded.
“Mom?”
“Yes?”
“He doesn’t sound bad.”
Margaret looked at her daughter.
“People who are dangerous don’t always sound dangerous.”
Emily didn’t argue.
But she didn’t forget Lorenzo either.
