Margaret looked at her daughter.
“Emily.”
“What?”
“Do you know who you texted?”
Emily shook her head.
Margaret swallowed.
“Lorenzo Moretti.”
Emily frowned.
“Who’s that?”
Her mother sat down.
“He’s dangerous.”
Emily’s face changed.
“But he helped Noah.”
“That doesn’t make him safe.”
“Mom, he didn’t even come inside.”
Margaret had no answer.
She looked at the groceries.
There was enough food to last them weeks.
Why would a man like Lorenzo Moretti care?
She couldn’t understand it.
And that frightened her more than if he had demanded something.
The next morning, Margaret received a call.
She almost didn’t answer.
“Hello?”
“Mrs. Carter?”
“Yes.”
“This is Marco Bellini.”
Margaret went silent.
“Why are you calling me?”
“I wanted to assure you that no one intends to harm you or your children.”
“Then why are you contacting me?”
“Mr. Moretti asked me to check whether the baby had enough formula.”
