“Jack didn’t have family.”
I felt faint.
Jack had grown up an orphan, believing he had no family left. And if someone from my family had been visiting him, I would have known.
“I’m sorry,” Rachel said.
“How often was she here?”
“I hadn’t seen her before, but she came several times during his last few weeks. Sometimes she stayed a few hours.”
“What did she look like?”
“Dark hair. Early forties.”
“Did they argue?”
“Not that I saw.”
“What did they do?”
“Mostly talked. There were usually papers everywhere.”
“Papers?”
“Yes.”
I remembered the documents in Jack’s jacket.
“Can I see the security footage?”
“I can’t show you hospital surveillance.”
“Then tell me who she was.”
“I don’t know her name.”
I didn’t want to jump to conclusions. But I couldn’t leave it alone, either.
After several conversations with hospital staff, I finally saw the footage.
