“Marisol,” she said. “Oh, thank God. Where’s Luis? Is Luis getting the car?”
Gabby knelt down on the floor in front of her. Right there on the cold concrete in her hospital scrubs.

“Luis is getting the car,” she said softly. “Don’t worry about Luis.”
“The storm,” Jean said. “Did you hear the siren? It’s coming. It’s coming right for us. We have to get you into the bathtub. The bathtub’s the safest place.”
“I heard it,” Gabby said. “We’re safe. We’re all safe.”
Jean looked down at her own hands. At the towels.
“I’m going to need these,” she said. “When the baby comes. I’m going to need clean towels.” She looked up at Gabby with wide, frightened eyes. “I’ve delivered babies before. At St. Francis. Before Elmer and I bought this place. I know what to do. I promise. I’ll take care of you. I’ll take care of both of you.”
