A Woman's Mom Teased Her Husband for Five Years for Any Apparent Reason – Then, Over Sunday Dinner, He Finally Said, 'Tell Your Daughter the Truth, or I Will'

After the meal, I reached for the remaining plates. Wade put his hand on mine.

“Sit down, honey. Your mother has something to explain.”

“That's what they all say.”

She laughed. “What nonsense is this?”

He took out a large envelope.

“Either you tell your daughter what you’ve been hiding, or I will.”

Her fork clattered onto her plate. She was staring at the handwriting on the front.

“Where did you get that?”

I had never seen my mother scared before.

He took out a large envelope.

“Somebody tell me what’s happening,” I said.

Wade set the envelope in front of me.

Inside was an old birthday card. My name was on it, in handwriting I didn’t know.

Happy 12th birthday, Emily.

At the bottom: Love, Dad.

I looked up. “Dad?”

I had never seen my mother scared before.

“It means nothing,” my mom said quickly. “Anyone can write a letter, Emily. It doesn’t make him a father.”
