I thought all the problems were behind me.
I grabbed the counter. “Mom.”
She didn’t ask questions. She grabbed her keys and drove me to the hospital.
Wade got there ten minutes later, straight from work.
My mom opened her mouth. I knew exactly what she was about to say about him being late.
Then she saw him running down the hallway.
“Emily? Is she okay? What about the baby?”
She didn’t ask questions.
The doctor said the baby was fine. I just needed rest.
Wade sat beside me and held my hand. He asked the doctor questions. He typed every instruction into his phone.
My mom watched him the whole time.
When he left to get water, I looked at her. “What?”
She sighed. “Nothing. He really loves you, doesn’t he?”
“Yes, Mom. He does.”
"He really loves you, doesn’t he?”
She was quiet. “Your father loved me too. At least I thought he did.”
