“The wedding is off,” I told Douglas. “No matter what a test says. But this isn’t our secret anymore. I’m arranging a DNA test. Properly.”
He nodded. “Okay.”
The wait was the hardest week of my life, and it wasn’t because of Douglas.
“The wedding is off,”
It was because of Bruce.
He found me folding laundry the second night, twisting the hem of his pajama shirt.
“Is it because of the rings?” he asked. “Did I mess it up?”
I knelt and held his face. “You did exactly what Mom asked. None of this is yours to carry. That’s grown-up stuff.”
He nodded slowly. Then, smaller, “Is Douglas still going to be in our family?”
“Did I mess it up?”
I opened my mouth. Nothing came out.
Only days earlier I’d believed that wedding would give him a permanent family. Now I couldn’t even picture its shape.
