“Tell him I’ve spent three years looking for him.:
“Zip your coat. It’s freezing outside.”
He’d rolled his eyes, laughed, and kissed my cheek.
That dark green coat was the last thing I saw him wearing.
Lucas never came home that night.
His car was found two days later in a parking lot several miles away.
His phone was gone.
“Zip your coat. It’s freezing outside.”
There was no note, no message, and no sign he’d planned to leave.
Police searched for months. His friends were questioned. I put up flyers and followed every lead.
Nothing brought him home.
I never got rid of his things.
And now a stranger was sitting in my living room with his children.
“How long have you known Lucas?” I asked.
Nothing brought him home.
“About two and a half years.”
“Did he tell you about me?”
“He said you’d stopped speaking after an argument.”
