That is very different from saying that 13 countries have suddenly united to launch an offensive.
The difference may sound like a technicality, but it is not.
It can mean the difference between a defensive security partnership and the beginning of a multinational war.
Why maritime security matters to the entire world
Even people living thousands of miles from the Middle East can be affected when major shipping routes become dangerous.
The world's economy depends on maritime transportation.
Ships carry energy supplies, food, raw materials, manufactured goods and countless other products between continents. When a major route becomes unsafe, shipping companies may reroute vessels around longer and more expensive paths.
That can increase travel times, insurance costs and transportation expenses.
Eventually, those costs can affect businesses and consumers.
This is why governments take attacks on commercial shipping extremely seriously.
Protecting a major maritime chokepoint is therefore not simply a regional military issue. It can become an international economic concern.
