The examination room around me suddenly felt too bright and too quiet. Our daughter was sitting beside me, wrapped in a blanket, still watching every movement I made. She had stopped crying for the moment, but she had not released my shirt since I carried her away from that cage.
I looked at the phone.
There were several video thumbnails arranged on the screen.
I recognized my wife immediately in the first one.
In another, I could see the same backyard.
And the same iron cage.
But our daughter wasn’t inside it.
Something else was.
I leaned closer.
The responder stopped me before I could touch the screen.
“Don’t open anything yet.”
“Why?”
“Because we need to preserve what is on there.”
That sentence made everything feel different.
Until that moment, I had been thinking about what I had seen with my own eyes. A frightened toddler. A cage. Snakes. My wife swinging a baseball bat against the bars and telling our little girl to stand up and run.
