“School?”
“I told her she could stay home today.”
He nodded.
Then he placed the envelope on the marble island.
Something about the way he did it frightened me more than his expression.
“What is this?”
“Richard’s final instructions.”
My throat tightened.
“I thought yesterday was about his final instructions.”
“Yesterday was his funeral.”
Thomas looked directly at me.
“Today is about the truth.”
I almost laughed.
It was the kind of sentence people said in television dramas right before everything exploded.
I had no idea how literal that thought was.
I folded my arms.
“Fine.”
Thomas did not sit down.
“Before I give you that letter, there is something you need to understand about Richard’s estate.”
I waited.
He seemed to choose each word.
