Suddenly they were part of a story none of us had understood.
Grace asked, “Did he?”
“Yes.”
“How much?”
Melissa gave a bitter smile.
“Enough to give me the code to his private office.”
Victor turned away.
“Enough to leave me alone with his laptop.”
Gerald whispered something to Victor.
He did not respond.
“Enough,” Melissa continued, “to tell me where he kept records he didn’t want accountants seeing.”
Grace reached for the blue folder.
“And what did you find?”
Melissa looked at it.
“The reason Claire had to stop being an owner.”
I felt my pulse in my throat.
This was the part Grace had not fully explained to me.
She had said there were documents better introduced in court.
She had promised I was not in danger.
I trusted her.
But now, suddenly, I was frightened.
Grace lifted another document.
It was not corporate paperwork.
It was a bank transfer.
