“It isn’t noises.”
“Bypass it.”
Silence.
Then Mateo said, “No.”
Victor’s voice became quiet.
“If you want to keep working here, get it running.”
The recording ended.
Nobody moved.
I looked across the courtroom.
Victor no longer looked like a successful restaurateur.
He looked small.
That surprised me.
For years I had imagined truth as something that would make him monstrous.
Instead, truth made him ordinary.
A frightened, greedy man in an expensive suit.
Melissa wiped her eyes.
Grace asked, “What did you do after finding the maintenance records?”
“I began looking through archived documents.”
“Without authorization?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because I wanted to know what happened to my father.”
“Did you find anything involving Mrs. Hale?”
“Yes.”
Victor squeezed his eyes shut.
Melissa looked at me.
“I found the ownership transfer.”
I nodded.
Even though I knew.
“I knew Claire had been in the hospital after the accident. My mother talked about her. She said Claire almost died.”
