She turned toward me.
“At that exact moment, Mrs. Hale was unconscious on an operating table with a tube in her chest.”
Victor whispered, “No.”
It sounded involuntary.
Judge Monroe looked at him.
Then at Gerald.
Then back at the document.
Grace continued.
“The alleged consideration for the transfer was ten dollars.”
A woman in the gallery muttered something.
The bailiff looked back.
Grace removed another page.
“After obtaining what appears to be a fraudulent transfer, Mr. Hale filed amended company records describing himself as sole owner.”
Victor finally found his voice.
“My accountant handled that.”
Grace turned.
“Ronald Becker?”
Victor hesitated.
“Yes.”
“Your former accountant?”
“Yes.”
“The man who died in 2021?”
Victor looked at Gerald.
Grace nodded.
“Convenient.”
Gerald stood.
“Your Honor—”
“I’ll allow it,” Judge Monroe said.
Victor turned toward Melissa.
For the first time, she would not look at him.
That frightened him more than the documents.
