PART 3: The Unraveling

Mark looked up at my mother in complete panic, his arms trembling under Vivian’s weight.

“Eleanor, wait!” Mark shouted over the crowd. “You can’t cancel the reception! My family flew in from out of state!”

“I can, and I have,” my mother replied calmly, putting her phone back into her purse. “And while we are setting boundaries, Mark, let’s talk about the lease.”

The silence in the courtyard grew absolute.

“The townhouse you and my daughter were supposed to move into tomorrow is owned by my family’s real estate firm,” my mother continued, looking directly at him. “The lease agreement was contingent on a joint signed contract today. Since you are currently preoccupied, my daughter will be moving her belongings back into my home tonight.”

Vivian wriggled out of Mark’s arms, her feet hitting the pavement as her face flushed a deep, embarrassed red.

“You can’t do this!” Vivian shrieked, stepping toward my mother. “You’re ruining my son’s special day!”

“No, Vivian,” my mother said, stepping directly in front of me like an impenetrable shield. “You ruined his special day. My daughter simply learned who she married before signing the official court registry inside.”
