Daniel’s father reached for the documents with trembling hands.
“If the guarantee is pulled, the bank can freeze the revolving line.”
“Yes.”
“Our payroll clears Friday.”
“I know.”
His arrogance disappeared almost instantly.
Daniel stared at me as if I had become a stranger.
“Claire, we can talk at home.”
“We did talk at home. Every time I asked you to defend me, you said I was too sensitive.”
His mother stepped closer.
“Your parents came here looking like charity cases and now you want to destroy us because Madison spilled wine?”
My mother flinched.
That was the moment the last bit of guilt disappeared.
I opened my phone and forwarded one email.
“Not because of the wine,” I said. “Because the wine proved none of you planned to stop.”
