“My office contacted the estate after his death. Margaret’s attorney told us you had suffered a breakdown and left the state with your children.”
I stared at him.
“What?”
“I was given a forwarding address in Arizona.”
“I have never lived in Arizona.”
“I know that now.”
“How?”
“Because three months ago, someone used Michael’s old credentials to access a dormant foundation account.”
Margaret.
I knew before he said it.
“That triggered an audit,” Richard continued. “My investigators reopened everything. They found school records for your daughters here. Medical bills. Property tax records.”
“You knew I was in that house.”
“For three weeks.”
Anger rose inside me.
“You knew?”
“I needed evidence strong enough that she could not bury it.”
“So you watched?”
His face tightened.
“Yes.”
I hated him in that moment.
Maybe he deserved some of it.
“You sat at her table while my daughters were locked upstairs.”
