My fear returned instantly.
Not for myself.
For my girls.
“No.”
One guard approached.
I backed away.
“My children are upstairs.”
“Mrs. Carter—”
“You cannot put me outside without my daughters.”
Margaret folded her arms.
“They will remain here until you have calmed down.”
Everything inside me went cold.
I turned toward the staircase.
Richard spoke behind me.
“You won’t be leaving alone.”
I looked back.
He was staring directly at me.
“You and your daughters are coming with me.”
Margaret actually laughed.
“You have no legal authority to take anyone from my home.”
Richard’s expression did not change.
“Neither do you.”
Then he reached inside his jacket.
For one terrible second, I thought he was pulling out a phone.
Instead, he removed a folded document.
Margaret saw it.
And something happened to her face that I had never seen in six years.
Fear.
Real fear.
Not anger disguised as dignity.
