Maya screamed the first time a wave touched her ankles.
Grace screamed because Maya screamed.
Then both girls ran into the water laughing.
I stood on the sand watching them, and something inside me finally unclenched.
The next morning, we took a boat tour.
Grace held my hand so tightly when she saw a sea turtle beneath the water that her fingernails dug into my skin.
“Mommy! Mommy! Look!”
“I see it.”
“It’s real!”
Maya pressed her face toward the water.
“We found them!”
I turned away so they would not see me crying.
My mother had tried to steal this moment.
She had failed.
The destination had changed. The promise had not.
That afternoon, while the girls built a crooked sandcastle, Martin called.
“The title search is clean.”
I sat straighter.
“And Vanguard?”
“They increased the offer.”
“To what?”
“Five seventy-eight.”
“Why?”
“They want the land and intend to renovate before resale. They’ve reviewed the occupancy issue and are willing to acquire subject to lawful possession proceedings if necessary.”
