Except a six-year-old eventually realized something had to be done.
Lucy found the wheelbarrow behind the house.
It had belonged to her father.
She dragged it inside.
Then she lined the bottom with blankets.
She placed Noah inside.
Then Eli.
She added bottles.
Two diapers.
A stuffed rabbit.
And one photograph of her parents.
Then she started walking.
She didn’t know the distance.
She didn’t understand the danger.
She knew only one thing.
Hospitals helped sick people.
So she needed a hospital.
At one point, the wheelbarrow became stuck in loose dirt.
Lucy pushed.
It wouldn’t move.
She removed the babies one at a time, placed them safely on a blanket, freed the wheel, then put them back.
Later, she lost one shoe.
She continued walking.
A passing driver apparently slowed but didn’t stop.
Another vehicle passed.
Lucy kept pushing.
Eventually she reached the highway.
That’s where she saw the first blue sign.
