on a table nearby.
The photographer told us to move closer.
Owen put an arm around my shoulders.
Eli did the same.
From the back of the auditorium, Daniel watched.
Then Mason came down the aisle.
For one second I thought Daniel had sent him.
He hadn’t.
Mason stopped a respectful distance from us and looked at the twins.
“Could I get your contact info later?” he asked. “For the summer invitational. Our coach is putting together a mixed team.”
Owen smiled. “Sure.”
Eli nodded.
It was awkward, but it was real.
Three boys connected by a truth none of them had created.
Daniel had spent years avoiding one family and controlling what another one knew. In less than a day, the boys had begun dealing with the truth more honestly than he had.
After the photographs, Daniel approached me one final time outside the auditorium.
His anger was gone.
