My Ex-Husband Challenged Me at a State Competition He Did Not Control

back into the auditorium for the closing team challenge.

The boys turned toward the doors.

Daniel stepped forward.

“Can I watch?”

Eli looked at Owen.

Owen looked at me.

Then Eli said, “It’s a public auditorium.”

It was not forgiveness.

But it wasn’t punishment either.

Daniel returned to his seat.

Mason eventually came back with Vanessa and sat on the opposite side of her from his father.

The closing challenge wasn’t about individual scores. Teams were given a complex problem combining logic, engineering, and data analysis, then twenty minutes to present a solution.

Eli and Owen weren’t on the same sub-team for most competitions, but that afternoon their coach assigned them different roles in the same final presentation.

I watched Owen handle the mathematical model while Eli defended the practical design. Their teammates filled the gaps around them. Nobody dominated. Nobody needed to.

Their public school team finished first overall.
