Caroline:
HE HASN'T SPOKEN TO HER IN YEARS.
Response:
HE WATCHES HER. HE ALWAYS HAS.
Sophie looked at Alex.
He admitted quietly, “I had people make sure you were safe.”
She stared at him.
“We'll discuss that invasion of privacy later.”
“Understood.”
Maya continued.
“The final message was sent the night of the wedding.”
She opened it.
IF SHE REFUSES, PRESSURE HER. DO NOT LET HER CALL HER MOTHER.
My stomach turned.
“Who sent them?”
Maya looked directly at me.
“The phone number was routed through several services. But we traced the original payment account.”
She slid a photograph across the table.
For several seconds, my mind refused to understand what I was seeing.
An elderly man stood outside a bank.
White hair.
Cane.
Dark coat.
Sophie whispered, “Who is that?”
Alex stood so suddenly his chair fell backward.
“No.”
I couldn't speak.
Because I knew the man.
Everyone believed he had died eleven years earlier.
