Caroline believed Alex's missing evidence was hidden there.
So Jake was sent to Sophie.
Not merely to take the property.
To control access to it.
Laura had supplied Caroline with information for years.
Including the fact that Alex still cared deeply about Sophie.
“Then why attack her?” I asked.
Laura shrugged.
“Caroline panicked.”
Sophie stared at her.
“She thought Dad was coming back into my life.”
“Yes.”
“And if I transferred the condo to Jake, they'd tear it apart.”
“Yes.”
“And after they found what they wanted?”
Laura didn't answer.
She didn't need to.
Sophie walked out of the room.
I followed.
I found her in the courthouse bathroom, gripping the sink.
“I feel stupid.”
I stood behind her.
“No.”
“Mom, I married him.”
“You trusted someone who spent years earning your trust.”
“I loved him.”

She looked at herself in the mirror.
