“You ruined everything!”
She fought like someone completely different from the sister I knew.
Maya handcuffed her.
I could barely breathe.
“What are you talking about?”
Laura stared at me.
And smiled.
It was Caroline's smile.
Not literally.
But the same cold amusement.
The same certainty that everyone else was stupid.
“You always were Dad's favorite.”
“What?”
“He trusted you. He trusted Alex. Everybody trusted you.”
“Laura, what did you do?”
She laughed.
“All those years and you never wondered why Alex's letters disappeared?”
My stomach collapsed.
Sophie whispered, “It was you?”
Laura looked directly at her.
“Your father sent beautiful cards.”
Alex closed his eyes.
Sophie began to cry.
Laura continued.
“I burned most of them.”
“Why?” I shouted.
“Because Caroline paid me.”
The room spun.
“You knew Caroline nineteen years ago?”
“I introduced her to Martin.”
“What?”
Laura had met Caroline at college.
Caroline introduced her to parties, wealthy men, fast money.
