“Didn't he?”
Martin smiled.
“No.”
My heart began hammering.
“Then where is it?”
His gaze dropped.
Not toward my handbag.
Not toward the door.
Toward my left hand.
My wedding ring had been gone for ten years.
But I still wore another ring.
A small sapphire ring Alex had given me after Sophie's birth.
I touched it instinctively.
Martin smiled.
Then he whispered, “Ask him why he made you promise never to sell that ring.”
I confronted Alex that evening.
He saw the ring in my hand and immediately knew.
“You spoke to Martin.”
“What is inside this?”
“Evelyn—”
“What is inside my ring?”
Sophie watched from across the room.
Maya was present too.
Alex slowly sat down.
“Nothing now.”
My stomach dropped.
“What do you mean now?”
“The stone once contained a microfilm capsule.”
I stared at him.
“This ring?”
“Yes.”
“For how long?”
“Three days.”
“What?”
He explained.
