Alex leaned closer to the phone.
“Caroline.”
“You remember my brother.”
“I remember enough.”
“He remembers you too.”
“Tell Martin I'm glad gravity didn't finish the conversation.”
Maya shot Alex a look.
Caroline laughed.
“You always did enjoy pretending to be frightening.”
“I've never had to pretend with your family.”
Her amusement disappeared.
“We want what's ours.”
“The files were never yours.”
“They belonged to Martin.”
“They documented crimes.”
“They documented business.”
“Call it whatever helps you sleep.”
Caroline lowered her voice.
“You hid them in that apartment.”
“Did I?”
“We'll find them.”
Alex smiled.
“Then why are you calling?”
Silence.
That hit.
Finally, Caroline said, “Give us the original file and your daughter never sees Jake again.”
Sophie's face twisted with disbelief.
Alex responded instantly.
“She'll never see Jake again anyway.”
“Then maybe she won't see anyone.”
Sophie went white.
My fingers tightened around the phone.
Alex's expression changed.
