“The terrifying Boss had an accountant?”
Maya's expression told me not to joke.
Alex continued.
“Vale stole from people who trusted me.”
“How much?”
“Thirty-six million dollars.”
My mouth went dry.
“What happened to him?”
“He disappeared before I found out.”
“And now he appears at Sophie's wedding?”
“Yes.”
“That can't be a coincidence.”
“No.”
Maya folded her arms.
“Especially because Caroline Whitmore's maiden name is Vale.”
The room went silent.
Sophie whispered, “What?”
Maya looked at her.
“Martin Vale is Caroline's older brother.”
I turned slowly toward Alex.
He seemed unsurprised.
“You knew.”
“Five minutes ago.”
Sophie sat up despite the doctor's warning.
“So Jake's uncle worked for Dad?”
Alex nodded.
“Why didn't anyone tell me?”
“Because until tonight, I didn't know Caroline was connected to him.”
Maya removed her phone.
“We ran the family links after the incident at the condo.”
“What happened there?”
Maya looked at Alex.
