“Dad?”
“Yes?”
“What fell from my balcony?”
He looked at me.
Then back at her.
“A man.”
“Who?”
“We don't know yet.”
His phone vibrated.
He read the message.
His face went blank.
“What?” I asked.
Alex showed me the screen.
A photograph appeared.
A man on a stretcher.
Blood on his shirt.
Still alive.
Sophie stared.
“I know him.”
“Who?”
“He was at the wedding.”
Alex zoomed in.
“Name?”
“I don't remember. Caroline introduced him as some kind of property consultant.”
Alex's eyes sharpened.
“Think.”
Sophie closed hers.
“Martin. Martin Vale.”
Alex went completely still.
I noticed.
“Who is Martin Vale?”
He locked his phone.
“Trouble.”
By five fifteen, Sophie was asleep under mild sedation.
Alex stood at the window.
“We need to leave before sunrise.”
“Where?”
“Somewhere secure.”
“I'm not disappearing.”
“Evelyn.”
“My daughter was attacked, and I want Caroline arrested.”
“She will be.”
“Then call the police.”
