His phone rang.
He answered.
“Yes.”
I could hear a man's voice but not the words.
Alex listened.
Then said, “Don't touch anyone. Just watch.”
He hung up.
“Alex.”
“They went to Sophie's condo.”
“What?”
Sophie sat upright.
“My condo?”
“Three cars. Nine people.”
“Why?”
Alex looked toward her.
“Because they believe you came here.”
Sophie looked confused.
“So why go to the condo?”
“Because what happened tonight wasn't spontaneous.”
A cold sensation crawled up my back.
“What does that mean?”
Alex walked to the window.
“People don't bring prepared property documents to a bridal suite unless they've been planning the transfer.”
I had been so consumed by Sophie's injuries that I had not considered that.
He continued.
“They expected her to sign tonight. Once she did, Jake could claim she voluntarily transferred property to her husband after marriage.”
“But she didn't.”
“No.”
“So they're desperate.”
Alex nodded.
Sophie whispered, “For a condo?”
