January 18.
Six days before Daniel Bennett’s plane went down.
Grace zoomed in.
A folder lay on the table between them.
Blue.
Her father’s hand rested on it.
Ethan looked furious.
A fifth message arrived.
This one made Grace stop breathing.
CHECK WHAT YOUR HUSBAND TOOK FROM THE CRASH SITE.
Grace looked toward Declan.
“What did Ethan take?”
Declan’s face changed.
“I don’t know.”
“You investigated the crash.”
“We never had evidence Ethan was there.”
Grace stared at the photograph.
“He was there?”
“Not at the crash.”
Declan hesitated.
“He arrived at the recovery facility the next morning.”
“Why?”
“He told investigators he was family.”
“He was.”
“Yes.”
“What did he take?”
“I don’t know.”
Grace called Ethan immediately.
No answer.
Again.
Nothing.
Rebecca contacted the agents.
One minute later, she lowered the phone.
Her face was pale.
“What?”
Grace asked.
Rebecca looked at her.
“Ethan’s gone.”
